2017.02.08. - 2017.09.15.
BUDAPEST MUSIC CENTER, Budapest, Hungary

Preparatory phase with Pascal Dusapin, Peter Eötvös, Andrea Meláth and singers

8-13 February 2017, Budapest Music Center

Production phase with Peter Eötvös, Gregory Vajda, Andrea Meláth

4-15 September 2017, Budapest Music Center

This special music theatre workshop announced by the Peter Eötvös Contemporary Music Foundation is aiming to help young composers to produce contemporary duets for stage and give an insight of how an opera can unfold from the first ideas of a libretto to the very last beat of a premiere. The 5 best mini-operas of the workshop will be selected and presented at the Budapest Music Center staged by young directors of the University of Theatre and Film Arts.

Participating composers will work on their duets with Pascal Dusapin and Peter Eötvös, after which phase the mini-operas should be completed and sent to the Foundation. The fellow professors will select 5 composers to be invited to return to Budapest for the production phase. Composers who are not chosen can attend rehearsals as observers.

Selected composers will have the opportunity to fine tune their compositions with the professors and the collaborating young directors before rehearsals start. They will also have the possibility to work closely with the singers, attend rehearsals and make compositional adjustments if needed with the guidance of Peter Eötvös and Gregory Vajda.

The DialogScene workshop provides a unique experience for composers to follow the process of creating an opera from the very first version of libretto all the way to the stage performance.

Focus of the workshop: contemporary dramatic duet written for soprano/mezzo and bass baritone/tenor voices and piano and stage production.

Duration of the duet: approx. 15 minutes

The call is open for all nationalities. The course is suitable for composer students and young professional composers.

Libretto: The text must be public domain (70 years passed after the author’s death). In case the composer uses his or her own text, he or she must provide a written declaration to allow the Foundation to present the work without any additional fees in the frame of the DialogScene workshop. Dialogues can be written in the following languages: English, German, French, Italian. Hungarian language is also possible if the composer provides a rough translation of the text either in French or in English.
